Abstract: A new method for measurement of kinetic energy release in the dissociation of doubly ionized free molecules is presented. The two fragments are detected in coincidence, and the thermal motion of the dissociating molecule is corrected for in real time by accurate measurement of the time difference between the fragments within the coincidence window. The low overall detection probability often encountered in coincidence experiments is avoided by taking advantage of the strongly peaked angular distribution from the two particle decay. Preliminary measurements on the doubly charged ions of O2 and HD are presented. The experiments reported here constitute a feasibility study, and methods to enhance the information rate are discussed.
